Investment and trading: time horizon, risks and differences
Investing and trading do not always serve the same need. Before comparing returns, consider your objective, how long money can remain committed and the loss you can bear. An automated strategy is not a savings account.

Start with your objective, not the highest percentage
Money needed for an upcoming expense has different constraints from money intended for a distant project. Separate everyday needs, emergency savings and amounts you can expose to risk. The French AMF recommends matching a financial product to your objective, time horizon and risk tolerance.
Three comparison points
The distinction is not just about the number of days. Instruments, leverage and trading rules also change the nature of the risk. The categories below are reference points, not investment recommendations.
| Question | Long-term investment | Active trading |
|---|---|---|
| Horizon | Usually several years. | Positions can be very short; risk remains. |
| Monitoring | Allocation and rebalancing around the objective. | Signals, positions, execution and exposure. |
| Risk | Depends on assets and diversification. | Also depends on frequency, leverage and costs. |
Automation does not automatically reduce risk
Software can apply a rule repeatedly; it cannot control market movements. With leveraged products such as CFDs, a small move in the underlying can produce a large change in capital. Spreads and execution matter, particularly around economic announcements.
Multiple strategies do not guarantee diversification
Two differently named strategies can trade the same market and experience the same moves. Examine their assets, exposure direction and overlapping losing periods. Diversification concerns your overall holdings and can reduce some concentrations without eliminating the risk of loss.
Where FINBASE fits
FINBASE is a trading strategy hub, not a bank or a guaranteed savings product. You can explore track records, understand the selection method and view partner broker joining steps. This is general information: it does not replace an assessment of your circumstances by an authorised professional.
